Fishing-bug or is fishing THAT hard?

I'm playing on Ipad, I am now on the last day of Autumn, year 4, standard farm. I have the bamboo pole, I use +2 Fishing food, I'v fished in any water available to fish and I have gotten an amazing number of CD's, glasses, newspaper, seaweed, coca cola boxes but so far I have only seen 4 fishes, and caught just one of them. On and off I have been fishing, mostly in my farm's ponds but also in the river and the sea. Last week, the fishing has become a priority - but I never level up! I think I fish for 2-3 ingame hours every day in this autumn (28 days).
Is it intended to be that hard?

Lots of trash is a "problem" of the farm pond. You will struggle to gain xp there. It's almost impossible to level up that way.

Where you fish will help determine how much trash you will be exposed to. The river and ocean are better places to fish than the farm pond, but within those locations I think the trash ratios are reduced in certain places because of your ability to get to deeper water.

More fish strikes leads to more fish caught which leads to more xp, which leads to leveling up which makes the fishing easier. Your catch box increases in size, the fish don't get harder. A largemouth bass is always a largemouth bass.

I think if you are struggling to catch fish try fishing at the mountain lake on the southern tip of the eastern island. Cast down. The carp are very easy to catch. Bullheads are very smooth so they will soon be easily caught and the largemouth bass once you've had practice are less of a bugger than you would think.

Once you hit level 2 fishing you should get a fiberglass rod from Willy and buy bait if you are going to be serious about fishing. The bait will increase the strike rate of the fish. Which means more xp, which means faster leveling which means easier and more enjoyable fishing.

OK, thanks :) I read somewhere that even trash is helping levling fishing, so I spend the last hours of any day fishing in the ponds on my farm. Will go tpo the river and try fishing on that island you mention :)

Trash does help to level up, but it's only 3XP per trash item, and it takes 100 XP just to get to Fishing level 1. Then it's 380 XP for level 2, 770 XP for 3 and so on, and it just gets steeper all the way to 15,000 XP for Fishing 10

You can see how only catching trash would take you a long time to level up, but catching fish it's much faster.

Trash is 3 as One More Day mentioned.
But a basic carp is 8. Basic bullhead is 18. Basic largemouth bass are 19. I forget the chub value offhand, but you get my point.
Plus, the more the quality of your catch increases the XP value gained goes up, yet the fish do not get harder.

34 trash to level one, 93 more trash to get to level 2.
or at a maximum 13 carp for level 1 and 35 more carp for fishing 2 is a big difference.
I think some time in the mountain lake air with a wet line will change your mind about fishing. :)

              Well, I spent
2 whole days fishing with food +1 fishing and not ONE fish bit... and no trash either. It's now winter in my game - are there special winter spots ad spring spots snd so on?

Where did you fish? and how far into the water did you cast?

No fish and no trash? Did you just sit there with the line in the water for two days?

I believe that even the oldest of the guides don't recommend to level fishing on your farm, probably the person that said/wrote that to you was just trolling.
Fishing itself isn't hard, but the RNG screw up big time, if you're in spring it's better to fish on the mountain lake as their aggressiveness is low and you can stay there until you nag the feel of it.
If you're serious about fishing you will need a better rod and attach tackles later on as they make a hell of difference, also eating food that raise your fishing skill is important (but not necessary at lower levels), if you're like me that don't cook anything at all you can purchase a trout soup at Willy's.

Edit: Montain Lake = the lake when you leave the Mines, or the map that you can find Robin's shop.

yep, RNG does screw up BIG time. i immediately can catch Legend (after caught the other 4), hit the jackpot twice at the Casino in a week (with Magic Rock Candy), got the UFO on payment screen twice in a month (real life luck perhaps?), but haven't got a single Midnight Carp in the entire 2 YEARS !!...(ugh, this again >_>). sadly daily luck and luck buffs don't affect which kind of fish would bite the bait, and my luck is suck at this.
