well i was thinking about possibly having an ingame item or maybe a room at the space station that was dedicated to recording what animals or monsters you have found, what they can possibly drop, and their stats like health and how they react to their environment. So as you go along in the game every animal you find is recorded. So in order to find the health and stats and everything you need to take samples of the animal and things. I have seen the thing about samples in the forums now and then but my main point is have a beastiery that updates as you find animals and monsters so you can see what you have found and what it does. Maybe even record where you found the monster or animal exactly.
