I don't know if this has been improved but, in the latest Co-op demo video from StardewValley there's a chat going on with the two players, but no bubble, just a chat log on the lower left corner of he screen. It would be cool if there was a little text bubble coming out of the characters, I think it would be easier to chat, and I don't think it would ruin the view of the scene behind the player.
