This is one thing in my head, you won't catch me dead in a Glitch ship. That thing looks like a female night-toy mixed with a trumpet.

Welcome to Starbound, where we have space pirate penguins and cats riding mechas.

Actually, IMO the plant-theme is understated. I mean, it sorta just looks like they parked it on a jungle planet, left it there for a year, then took off again after strapping a couple bones to the front. Compare this with the Hylotl ship which seems the most extreme to me (but I actually like it anyway).

The bones are taken from the corpses of their enemies. Think of the Reavers from Firefly/Serenity, who strapped numerous skulls to their ships.

They should make the cockpit larger, or place it just above the telepad. There are probably ways to improve the overall layout while still having room to move around inside the ship. I think this problem was the result of focusing a little too much on the inside of the ship and not giving the player enough options to customize the outside. Hopefully they'll allow you to change this more over time, possibly as a post-release feature.

Even if we can't customize the ships much, it would be nice to be able to get a different race's ship or something.

I strongly disagree, they are not overdone at all.

I think it was damaged when they killed the crew and taken it / from the crash after it being abandoned and that is the way that they repair and it can regenerate and repair even more of the ship if more damage comes ...maybe even create the air for them inside from the radiations outside.

Well actually I kinda like the Avian ship, I don't mind that one because it looks like wood / clay, and I kinda like that for some reason lol. What I don't like though is the Floran ship, it looks too green for my tastes, I would love to be able to change it's color. I do think metal with wood would be a nice change though, so I agree with that. But what I would like to see more is the ability to change the color on the ships. Change color and then customize with background walls etc, being able to make it look really unique.

Not quite. I'm not a rocket scientist by any means and I might be entirely wrong, but as far as I know there's dust floating everywhere in space, which isn't a big deal if you're traveling at relatively slow subluminal speeds, but would cause a lot of damage when traveling at super crazy sci-fi FTL speeds, where the impact they'd cause would be greatly magnified. This would mean having to either design ships that would deflect that and have as little traps and protusions as possible (otherwise known as aerodynamic, just applied differently), or just stick a purpose built dome shield on the front to soak it all up.

TLDR; actual space faring vessels will look really weird

I wanted to do a lot more with the ships but I worked with what I had - the criteria was that they all must share the same layout, and all have modular expansions. I'll probably include ways to change the color of the interior walls, or even switch interior or even ship style with another race's.

Fun fact: The universal ship layout can trace its roots back to the "DEATH FROM ABOVE" Leviathan dropship made during predevelopment. I originally made a to-scale interior that fit perfectly inside it, it pretty much looked like the interior of a helicopter gunship, so naturally it was extremely cramped. I expanded it so it was "bigger on the inside" like houses in RPGs, and that became the starter ship you see today.

In future I plan to make lots of unique, non expandable ships with static interiors, so I can go hog wild with my sci-fi fantasies unadulterated.

  8. Awesome! That's the reply I was looking for!
Also awesome! But does that mean that you could switch ships? So if you find a ghost ship or something that you think looks really cool you could just move into it?

I wish we had the chance to build our own ship = ), but if there is huge selection of unique ships that will do just fine.

I second that idea. It's a great thing to find in otherwise "empty" areas. Like finding an abandoned coolship on an asteroid that normally would have just rock.

Do you mean Hydrogen particles, tachyons, radiation and all that sort of stuff? If so yes, there are many things that could hit a ship including micro-meteorites. I'm not a rocket scientist by a long shot myself but I do think about space a lot.

Some theorized ship designs incorporate a water-filled dome to the front of the ship to prevent radiation from harming the crew and interior parts. That along with large 'shields' made of metal could help, but at FTL speeds even an aerodynamic shaped craft can have it's nose crushed in by a 1oz rock just sitting in space. This is why the sci-fi energy shields we all see in shows and movies are a great idea and a wet-dream for space travel, not for defense during combat but to protect a ship simply during travel. So I guess if you incorporate shields into the mix then even a Borg Cube would fly well :)

EDIT: AGGGHH! I'm talking to Rho! Had to say it, too excited!

I love my Hylotl battle fish, myself and Barnaby have been through alot together... We've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die.

I think they really should change the ship, because this is just green metal with vines. This should be a entirely ship made of organic things, because that their race about, plants!
    Just my opinion :)
