(This game is set within the starbound universe, all races supported by fracking races are canon here) (although some people may appreciate if ponex were left out) Whoever you are, wherever you came from, you made it to the outpost. Maybe you hitch-hiked from a desolate planet. Maybe you were dropped off by an old captain. The outpost is busy today, many people of all races are looking for work in starship crews and the like... The outpost will function as the starting point for the story. Most likely the characters won't return. The story will begin with one character as the captain, (players will choose among themselves roles for each of them) who hired as many crew as he/she can. I have a couple planets and events in mind, especially dungeons from the game. I'll tell more if people don't care for spoilers or whatnot. More worldbuilding cause someone voted for it: The outpost is very crowded. There are so many people here that the line from terramart stretches outside. Most of the tables are full, lights blinking as people call for a waiter. Many glitch are serving as waiters today, busily beeping back and forth to and from the tables. The smell of Terren food permeates the main hall. Off to the side, in a large hall, the teleporters are clogged with travelers, and beyond that, ships fill the parking spaces by penguin pete's. Everywhere you look you see people. Except you don't see many Avali cause they're short. Newly installed elevators take a small number of scientists upstairs to the labs. You hear talk of techs that can be installed into a person for extra mobility. There is a small staircase leading downstairs to the less reliable areas of the outpost. In the hallway to the bar, there are probably many teens loitering about. There is a weapons shop down this staircase as well, but it is too busy to get at. Sometimes a ship leaves a parking space, but it is just as quickly replaced by another, nearly resulting in a crash almost every time. As people talk, it grows louder, but somebody in the corner keeps shushing everyone, bringing he noise down to almost tolerable levels. You have been sitting at a table alone for a long time. So much for the notion there would be captains looking for hires... Character sheets will be kept pretty basic: HP, Attack, Defence, Magic, Marksmanship, Speed, Scavenging. HP does what it does best. A rough measurment of a player's vitality. Attack functions both as a strength value and as a physical attack value. Defense lowers any physical damage applied to a player. Magic works both as an attacking value and as a defending value for magical attacks. In certain situations it may be used for wisdom. Marksmanship is an attacking value used for guns and bows. Yes, this includes spaceship cannons! Speed will be used for measuring the time it took the party to get somewhere, will be used to determine turn order, and also affects dodge chances. Scavenging determines your skill with crafting, enchanting, blacksmithing, and determines inventory size. Skills/Perks/Abilities: These are statements about your character that can bend the rules of the game a bit! They've proven hard to explain, so here are some examples: This character cannot be tripped/stunned while in contact with the ground. They can have prefixes, usually explaining why this perk applies: Due to this character's biology, speed is raised by 10 while in water. (Orcana) And they can be named if you want: Skillful reader: This character receives an extra 30% exp from reading. With these, it is best to be creative! I will check all the perks before I approve anyone's character, and will probably decrease their power (if the forums are as bad as my friends ) don't worry if I lower the power of your perks, they can be leveled up! See @Dragonclaw 's post below for App info One last note, there are thirty player spots available. I take the permadeath seriously, too. Don't leave all the way when you die though, because some rare items can revive a fallen hero. They are very rare and difficult to get though... Edit- Removed a bunch of behind the scene stuff Edit2- Noted where the REAL application info is
Just a word of warning, you typically don't want to host a tabletop style roleplay on here, as it gets very difficult and tedious to sacrifice narrative for the sake of mechanics. Stats and such should be used to give the GM a general idea for successes rather than for dice rolls. Combat can be dice rolled, but keep in mind you don't want to punish players for bad RnG. Oh, and trust me when I say you won't get thirty players quickly and you really don't want that many. I'm a very experienced GM and am at my limit keeping up with only about ten or so.
I know about keeping my players down. I figured I wouldn't get very many anyway... And for this system there are no dice rolls at all!! It is pure math and story telling!!! Anyway, thanks for the tips, I hope I get a couple players...
This looks really cool. One thing though. 12 points for 7 stat sections? I could probably understand if it was out if 3-5, but if it's out of 10 it doesn't make much sense to me. I'll also make a character app layout for you (if you want) so people can copy-paste and fill it out. I'd be glad to help.

Alright, is this acceptable? And just so you know, these forums are actually some of the best you'll find. Power fantasies are not what one looks for here, good narrative is. I mean, this isn't deviantart. we're not all overpowered Mary Sue edgelords... Name: S'hīerta Bhalask Race: Sallōk Image/description: Muddy scales and a short stature of 4' 2". Small muscles and powerful legs. Occasionally does water based vape. Backstory: She's a courier by trade, but that's not all she really does. Going places fast has always been her thing. No waiting, no stopping. It's gotten her out of trouble as often as she gets herself in it. Running is always what she does. Running to her delivery point. Running from the police. Running to nab a loose purse. Running from her past... STATS (17 points total) (I'm assuming 5 means average? Or is 0 the average?) HP - 1 Attack - 4 Defense - 0 Magic - 0 Marksmanship - 0 Speed - 10 Scavenging - 2 Skills/Quirks: +Sallokian biology: Her claws and tail provide some support in climbing and balance, while said claws are useful as in a fight if need be. +outlast, out dodge: She can keep up her fast pace for a fair while and keep the enemy on their toes even up close. +Hit n' run: A blow from a running reptile is not one to underestimate. -Glass jawed: While she can avoid most shots well, those times she can't are likely going to be the death of her. Even a moderate wound are enough to put her entirely out of commission and leave her vulnerable. -Fugitive: One against all. while not well known, she can still be noticed and pointed out as a person of interest and concern, likely to bring trouble with her. -klepto for yellow: she has a peculiar compulsion to steal anything of the color yellow... which tends to lead to trouble. -sallokian biology: Cold blood leaves her vulnerable to temperature change, and her tail is easily something one can snag. Strong muscles cover up fragile bones. A baseball bat to the arm would likely shatter them. A blow to the head could knock her out.

Decreased dodge change on grabs. I removed a lot of the behind the scenes stuff, but there isn't really an average because the stats are designed to be infinitely scaleable. At level 1 it is probably best to have at least 1 in each stat (My assistant program won't divide by 0, only a problem for defense and magic though), but I won't stop any 0s (count as .5). I think I'll set max level as 100. I edited a couple of the Perks/Traits, but they're effects are identical, except for negative biology where a part was removed because it was already covered by glass jaw. To be honest the number are there cause I love numbers, (and for my assistant program) so you can ignore them if you want. Approved EDIT: changed scaling on HP cause I forgot... ;P P.S. Good call on 5 being average, this system is pretty old, and 5 used to be default, with players choosing pairs of +1 -1.
Could just go with that then, sounds like a self balancing system. Stats are all 5 by default, and you can trade off some stats to raise others at a one to one ratio, (essentially starting with 30 stat points) But that's just what I used to do for Narrative roleplay. Not sure about these number/stat based ones.
I may try the old system for another RP, I'm curious how this will turn out. Of course there used to be nine stats...
Sounds about time to begin... Shierta is designated captain because that's the... only character. @Jareix Cryvix Do you want a Cruiser (FTL capable, +Speed), Battleship (FTL capable, +Weapons), Carrier (+Cargo, Spin Section equipped), Destroyer (+Weapons, +Armor), Escort (Shields, Digital Camo), Frigate (+Defense, Spin Section equipped). Right... @Dragonclaw
Forgot to put it in a spoiler. Hope this code works. Name: Kevin Race: Avali Image/description: 5'10", orange trim, white feathers, and grey plumage. Wears an Avali exosuit and carries a dagger and a rifle. Backstory: Raised on a trade colony, Kevin was genetically augmented to allow him to work on the colony. This also increased his height... A LOT. After a few other adventures, and a war on his home world, he's come here. Now he's ready to help out. Or just go on an adventure. Probably both. STATS HP - 4 Attack - 4 Defense - 2 Magic - 0 Marksmanship - 4 Speed - 2 Scavenging - 1 TRAITS: +Genetically augmented: This allows Kevin to have a faster reaction time than normal. It also made home one tall Avali. +2 reaction time. +Feathers: These allow Kevin to be able to fall from much higher heights than a human, for example. They also help insulate him from the cold. -2 damage taken from falls. -Too HOT: Since Kevin is an Avali, he isn't very good with heat... at all. -1 HP in hot places. -Magic?: He doesn't exactly know what it is, much less how to do it. -Can't use magical stuff.

You'll find the modified (Edited) /Traits/ will help you a lot later in the story! Some traits were combined into "Avali Biology". HP was multiplied by 10 because that's how it's scaled (1 point for 10 HP). Once Shierta chooses a ship I'll begin another thread for in character, then Shierta will (Hopefully) hire you. P.S. HOLY BALLS YOU ARE TALL
