Hi there, Imagine you are mining or exploring a planet, then suddenly, your ship send you a message saying, that your home planet radar have detected an hostile ship or a merchant ship and that they will arrive 1 or 2 days later. So you jump on your ship and go FTL to your home planet, to receive those visitors... If it's a merchant, for sure he will have some rare items... If it's a pirate ship you will have some troubles, but if you defeat them, you will have some nice items. And why not implement a sort of gang system, you can find a planet with a gang, if you kill or attack one of them, there is a chance that they will attack your planet, and if a gang attack your planet, you can loot a "coordinate map" of the gang home planet, so you can attack them in return. If you don't go to your home before the visitors came, if it's a merchant, you will miss it, and if it's a gang or pirates, they will probably steal some of your items, or maybe destroy a part of your home if they are very angry.
Random events are awesome, but if done poorly it can lead into what happened in the Spore end-game. I remember it being rather tedious to jump back and forth to previously owned planets every 15 minutes.
