1. Welcome to the Art + Literature sections! Some things to keep in mind:
    • It's a good idea to specify whether or not you're looking for critique from your fellow members. Please don't let friendly criticism turn into an all-out flame war.
    • Art and literature often deal with mature subjects. This is fine, but please keep in mind that we'd like to keep things PG-13. Don't let discussions get out of hand, and if they do, please alert a moderator.
    • If you've got a request, please use the [REQUEST] prefix!

HELP I(all of you too) REALLY NEED TO HONE MY DIGITAL ART SKILLZ, I CAN ALREADY DRAW REALLY WELL ON PAPER BUT IT'S SO DIFFERENT ON THE COMPUTER.
Basically this here is a learning thread for everyone, for artists to conglomerate and learn from each other, share art via interesting events and etc.

    What can you do?
Oh I dunno, I'll be taking requests as a minor thing, like seriously please don't overwhelm me,
I can probably get one request done per say.... every couple days?
Afterwards I would ask that you constructively criticize my work and if you want I'll go back and fix any issues.

    So to sum it up:
-Request stuff from me. TAKE IT EASY IF THERE ARE OTHERS REQUESTING
-Challenge me or other artists in a DUEL.

-Critique other's or your own work here. BE KIND BUT CONSTRUCTIVE
-Post guides, helpful statements, easy to use programs, templates, etc. NOT FOR ADVERTISING
    -LEARN

    CONTINUED STUFF YOU CAN DO:
Feel free to criticize my work, really in any way you'd like. To me all criticism is constructive. (To everyone it should be).
Just don't be a butt face, nobody likes a butt face. if you guys want you could even challenge me,
Like if you think you're on the same level as me in terms of digital art skill and the thread is active enough,
then we can get new viewers and posters on the thread to vote for and criticize each person's work.
The person with most votes and least kinks to work out at the end wins, for now I guess you'll gain nothing but regard and respect.
(I do not have to participate in the challenge, if two other people want to go at it then I'm fine with that, as long as everyone still plays by the rules of the game).

    Rules Of The Art Duel:
Rule 1: Don't be a jerk, sportsmanship is key, if you win then don't rub it in.
Rule 2: Don't try to charm your way into votes or use popularity for votes, this is about the art.
Rule 3: You must draw something related to the topic that the two duellers settled on in the first place.
Rule 4: The drawing you submit doesn't have to be digital art, but it is preferred.
Rule 5: Take criticism softly, the point of the game is to put a competitive edge to learning how to get better,
don't get a nosebleed over someone being too honest about your work, if it's that bad then that just means you have space to learn.

Rule 6: Depending on the size of the challenge the art must be submitted within a previously agreed upon time frame.
Rule 7: No one person can duel two duels at the same time, however numerous duels may occur at the same time as long as they don't interfere with each other.
Rule 8: DO YOUR BEST, DON'T JOKE AROUND, WHEN YOU DON'T TRY YOUR HARDEST AND STILL WIN IT HAS A VERY NEGATIVE IMPACT ON YOUR OPPONENT, WHILE THEY MAY BE YOUR OPPONENT IT'S NOT LIKE YOU'RE FIGHTING TO THE DEATH, JUST SHOW YOUR BEST WORK AND DON'T GET COCKY, THERE'S ALWAYS SOMEONE BETTER IN SOME WAY.
SIDE NOTE: THE PLAYERS WHO ARE MARKED IN GREEN HAVE WON THE DUEL, BLUE MEANS BY FORFEIT HOWEVER.
When both players are marked in white it means that the duel was a tie.

If you want a more range of colors - doing layered coloring is a much better option in digital art ( its also how pastel painting is done time to time )
A good guide for the basics

This site is where I learned about 80% of what I know about photoshop
    http://design.tutsplus.com/categories/adobe-photoshop

Dealing with Shadows in your previous pictures is still a flat color.
Layered colors deals more with merging those colors upon layers.

A great example was done by one of the artists in Wolfire Games in a Timelapse video of a Rat Warrior Concept Art.

You can see how he starts with one basic colors and then adds upon it.
He starts off with each color in separate layers then merges them in when he likes it.

    quick tip for hands/arms

arms tend to go down to mid-thigh when they're straight, and hands are the size of the face, and the length of the inner forearm (if you bend your elbow and hand to make a |_| shape, your other hand will fit between the crook of your elbow and your wrist.)

the base shape of the hand is a kind of lopside pentagon, and the fingers radiate in a ) ) shape. and don't forget that wrists exist :)
i say lopsided pentagon because the upper corner (where the pinky emerges) is more or less a 90 degrees angle and its sides are quite long, with the other 3 sides being moderately equal in length and angle. practise looking at your hand and breaking it into its constituent shapes, then move onto angles of your hand and breaking it up. if you're having trouble with an angle, you can draw lines onto your hand to segment it up, then turn your hand that angle and you will be able to more easily see what the shapes look like.

Proportions... documentation... draw yourself, or rather, outline a pose you want to learn... outlining is bad, but it helps you learn, your hand becomes accostumed to distances, your eye judges better... take screenshots of your work... the camera reveals the problems your brain cant understand (this is a natural thing in everyone) when you are drawing... make sure to move your perspective from time to time (aka how you look at the drawing while working) if you keep drawing without checking your lines... its easy to misjudge distances... draw too long or short... too thick or slim, draw lines in between joints (hip-to-arm-to-shoulder, arm-to-shoulder-to-head)

Once you ve drawn what you want, screen it, look at it... find mistakes, be judgmental, but not critical to yourself... draw that pose again, or rest and imagine the pose you want, how you want it to look, draw it or just sketch it... even scribble it... one arm only, or a leg, draw a stick and call it a torso, then draw a fully detailed leg...

To make a piece look like its in motion its very ambitious, you will get there if you practice... so long you dont get discouraged, try and draw... sketch, rinse and repeat, maybe experiment with different shapes and keep things interesting
    -Corrigane

One odd little posing trick Elldar taught me is drawing circles in place of joints, and add the connecting lines afterwards. If you aren't good with judging proportions, draw circles about a heads size in radius from the end of each joint and place the next joint within it. Afterwards, you draw the detailed body over it. It sounds silly, but works quite well for me with practicing poses. Otherwise, I just do the whole line of motion and sticks with normal illustrations.

after the first couples duels I'll add in some extra rules to buff out anything bad that might've happened.

    WOAH BRO

Well, I can tell you that making an image on a computer from scratch isn't easy (based on my experiences). I personally draw the picture on paper and then scan to a file when I'm making digital art.

Damn son, that's nice! :D Traditional art feels so much easier to me than digital. It can do so much better that way.
Ugh, I really wanna do that. I need a scanner! But I've seen stuff like that, where people draw, scan, and then color or redo it digitally. It's gorgeous stuff.

Hahah, yeah I would, but the only scanner in my house is currently broken and we never use it anyway.
    Which sucks so bad.
I've seen stuff like that too! It's such a higher level of quality to draw it on paper and then digitally finish it or add effects or anything like that.
Thank you though! It's one of those drawings that I actually sit down and plan to draw something good.

Man, that must be pretty frustrating.
Have you tried using something that could take pictures, like a camera/phone? Although the pictures are usually pretty blurry, being able to spot out the lines in the pictures can still be a big help, particularly when you're trying to get an outline to color in.
