When I first started playing Starbound I came across a bunch of different items and had no idea what they did. The general description of the item was that they could be used to upgrade or craft weapons. Woo-hoo, I thought. But how? Off I went to the wiki. I think that games should not assume a player will go to a wiki for information. Perhaps for help discovering secret areas, or obtaining the rarest of all items, but not basic stuff. In other games I've played with crafting systems, when you pick up an item you can do a search to see all the recipes that utilize that item. Even those recipes that the character hasn't yet unlocked. This would help players determine whether an item that says "useful for upgrading" is actually worth keeping.
