Lightning rod placement

If I want to make battery packs using my lightning rods, does placement matter? I want to know if spreading them out gives me a better chance of a hit on the rod or if clumping them together has the same chance to get me a battery pack. Thanks in advance.

 

No, though I would put them in the grass and place grass starters on them for the sole purpose of creating a patch that the animals can't eat but will continue to spread throughout the field.
