Looking at the comment above mine again I agree there. But is their anyway to make them a tiny bit less cartoony? Nevermind i'll do it myself. (can I copy one of your sprites and add/change some pixels to it and see how it looks?) (plz)
The "mouth" is just two pixels that gives it a visible maw, which compared to the other races, only the apex and avian have anything close to this. For the head shape, the only other option is to flatten the forehead more like the title art, but given the incredibly small parameters of the default race's face, I cannot go more than two pixels outward for a snout without running into problems with the Drale wearing other race's helmets. The topic of "cartoony" has came up several times throughout the thread, so I'll summarize the conclusion: Being a 2-D platformer with several silly aspects such as slime-shooting elephant spiders and multi-eyed flying eggplants, a game such as Starbound is already pretty "cartoony." Now, there is a crude line where something does become too "cartoony," but in my opinion that happens when sprites start looking like 80's shows.
I'm thinking of making the first release be right after I finish making generated, Swift-Steel Legion Dungeon/Settlements. It should be soon considering that I only need to make guard npcs and the generated files themselves. The guards will be wearing the first of the unique armors which gives stat boosts at the cost of lower base stats. You'll be able to buy the recipes for the unique armors from vendors; they are made from the starter clothing of the respective faction.
Both the drale and the glunaught are fabulous races, I love your work with the Drale and the whole concept. Once both of them come out as a mod i'm going to download them strait away and play with both a Drale character and a Glunaught character. Both races (Drale and Glunaught) are fantastic and i love them, they had alot of time and effort put into them which makes me like them so much. I just love dragons and knowing that theres a race for space dragons makes me crazy, I love your work and all the time you put into it. Also I will do some multiplayer with meh buds with both of your epic race(s). P.s I posted this on both the glunaught forums page and the drales forum page as you see, the post is a bit different on each race. P.P.s Great job on the race btw! Its FABULOUS.
This suggestion looks awesome. Definitely going to download and play the game as one once I get the chance; just wanted to know what the wings will allow you to do?
I would like a glide ability, but one that is more interesting, faster and less energy consuming than the current levitate one. One way is that they convert your vertical speed into horizontal, and you now accelerate sideways. Then it might be pretty kickass. Also, if it's possible, when you use the pulse jump with this equipped, you instead flap your wings rather than do the glowy platform that happens now. (I was making a mod that did that a la, Castlevania:sotn or Dust :an elysian tail, but then I left for Iceland. Alas, reality has a way of laying low the things that really matter.)
Perhaps as a racial ability? Although I would dislike that because the wings are a part of them. Adding a straight up feature because they're there I also dislike for the sake of balance... unless someone adds default racial abilities into the game.
Well, racial items are going to have abilities attached to them. Perhaps you can upgrade your wings, treating them like an armor? This could represent intentionally designing your gear to be flight ready, and perhaps designing an anti gravity pack to assist them, as well as reinforcing and strengthening the wing itself to bear your weight.
Nifty, though I doubt that a race such as the Drale would make such "samey" architecture. My guess is that they would use their environment: they'd stretch leather, wood and metal over a remaining bit of rubble of the ancients, or they'd build underground houses, utilizing space between boulders or caves to make settlements. Hmm. . . That would be cool, underground settlements, they don't have to be deep, they might just be "inverted" buildings. But that would be interesting and call back to their lore of when they lived in caves. Some more modern towns may be above ground, especially when there are existing outcroppings or things to build off of. Perhaps the push towards aboveground structures is controversial in society, and some of the random statements are either "living aboveground is strange. . . It's too open." While others say "i like to be able to spread my wings, living on the surface is way better than in caves." and other Drale are more vocal in their dissent: "those surface dwellers don't know what's good for them. Living aboveground is dangerous; I can't wait to see one of those lanky towers fall on their heads." While such prejudices aren't dangerous, or affect much of anything or anyone, they might bring a bit more character to the race.
Yeah I feel as though the buildings look too new. I'll be sure to put more ruinous structures in (rooms with holes and patches of sand), With the Swiftsteel Legion, their buildings tend to be only slightly above ground with some of their structures submerge. I'm gonna save the leaning and buried skyscrapers for something like Neo-Iron dungeons where streets are populated by Rogue Robots.
