Don't know if anybody posted this or if it's planned, but I find mimics to be an interesting mob in all games. There will undoubtedly be loot chests, could it hurt of some of them weren't legitimate and, you know, tried to eat your face? Mimics may seem too much like a fantasy creature, and some others (Kodee, CalamityQuote, Nerva) have had great ideas. The mimics could be robotic, possibly a way to protect their masters items. You could maybe even have your own mimic as a sort of safeguard in your storage room to stop thieves.

terraria: a 2d game where chests can start attacking you powerfully when you get close or attack them and drop good chest loot.
Because terraria is totally the first and only game to ever use mimics...... Oops, someone else beat me too it
Well you can always take the concept and make it more sci-fi. Like, the chests are really robots used as a security thingymabob to stop theives. Or something.
A agree that it seems a bit too much like a fantasy creature. Maybe it could be a robot that protects the loot of its master. It would be incredibly hostile, and the only way to obtain the treasure is too destroy it. Maybe you could also make your own as well, just in case someone tries to steal all your gear in multiplayer. EDIT: Basically what Kodee said.
I'm not exactly fond of mimics, personally. Lots of creatures use disguise and camouflage, but few can perfectly mimic a manmade object well enough to fool something of human-like intelligence. However, if you were to expand the idea to include monster-in-a-box scenarios, I could definitely get behind that. Think about it - some mid-size creature finds an open chest/crate/other container, thinks it's a cozy place to bed down for the night, then something happens to cause the lid to shut, and it latches closed. You just happen to stumble by before the creature died of suffocation or starvation, and now you have to deal with a hunger-crazed entrapped beastie inside the container. It should be rare, very rare, but possible. Another option is that the monster-in-a-box is so weak from hunger that it can't resist you. You can kill it, sure... but you could also take it home and nurse it back to health. Perhaps even tame it that way.
Say wha? MY NAMES UP THERE!!! I'M FAMOUS! WOOOHOO!!!!!!!! (Also on an unrelated note, just realised I accidentally voted meh instead of yeah )
I am aware of the fact that mimics did not originate from Terraria. Hell, I remember reading about them in an old Dungeons and Dragons guide. But they did still make an appearance in Terraria, and it's a similarity that might be called into question if they did appear in Starbound. I also somehow knew people would start having a go at me because of the wording of my first post. I should have just reworded it to save the bother of explaining myself.
Hm, maybe. If it was implemented in a different way like the robot-chest or monster in a box as we discussed earlier though, I doubt it would. You could be right though.
I guess part of the issue is that it wouldn't make sense to have mimics as creatures in a sci-fi game. Like you said, they'd have to be robots or something.
