Fairly simple idea - when crafting, let crafting station account for not only player's inventory but also contents of whatever storage object is within [X] blocks from player. I.e. You craft something, and it needs iron bar, but you don't have iron bar in your inventory, but you have iron bars in a chest that is in vicinity of the player. So, the crafting table accounts for iron bars from that chest and let you craft that thing, spending bars from the chest.
This is a very good idea. I already tried to make a mod like that but I gave up because I didn't manage to find the file which handles the inventory for the crafting stations.
