multiplayer has horrible latency

hi people, please help us.

i have no problems playing starbound on my own, but when me and my friends try to play, everyone but the host usually suffer from an extremely high latency, to the point that we can't do anything for over a minute.

we join directly to our friend's game via steam's join game option, because when he made a dedicated server, we got an error trying to join via IP.

i need to know if there's a fix for this, because is killing the thrill of multiplayer
