I was looking at some of the screen shots and test videos for Starbound and something stood out to me. The edges on the ground tend to look blocky and unnatural. This only bugged me on the blocks containing grass, everything else looks fine. If you were to make only the blocks 1 square high, 2 squares across have rounded (or even diagonal) joining pieces, this would add an entire new depth to the look and feel of the game. I've uploaded some example shots of what I mean. I did these in about 5 minutes in Photoshop, so obviously, they aren't professional, but from a developer's stand-point, it seems like it could be easy to make this idea come to life and look more polished than what I have here. But these will show you what I mean. -Original Screen Shot -Same shot with rounded joining pieces (I know, it's not perfect. Just wanted to illustrate my idea quickly.) -Both images put together for comparison (Gif) Again, this is just something that struck my fancy. It may very well be extremely hard to incorporate this idea, I'm not sure. Just thought I would pass it along on the forums to see what everyone else thought of it. Thanks for reading!
I think it would kill the blocky feel of the game, and thats one of the things i loved about terraria. nice idea though
I've got to agree with NotAnAnon; the blocky feeling of the game is an insanely important aspect. The only problem I have ever had with the blockiness was getting suck on singular blocks (which looks to have been fixed).
If I'm not mistaken , there were some official information about the implementation of slopes to the terrain.
I agree with NotAnAnon, but your right the grass doesnt join to well. Maybe a combination of both, no slopes, but the grass connects to eachother.
I like the idea but trying to mine the top or edges of the rounds may wind up making you mine up something that you don't want.
Good catch. I didn't really notice that. Could be a part of the art style too though. Terraria's grass did join together, so Tiy has probably noticed the difference already.
