RELEASED Squids in Space: A Splatoon Mod V3.1 ~ Hotfixes ii

A species mod based off of Nintendo's Splatoon.

    Those lollipops are adorable, and so are the signs and the little squid! :') And yeah, their font is hard to replicate in spriting: normally I just do little dots, dashes and angular shapes to mimic it, although sometimes I'll base things off the actual text (such as with the vendor stalls).
    All of those look fantastic, though!

    ... I, uh, should've probably taken notes / photos when I was goofing around with all the folks on the Testfire demo earlier. There's just so much stuff that I could use as inspiration, ahaha.
    (I'm too busy running around after all these newbies and making sure they don't die, I can't stop to get ideas!)

    Woo! I've been waiting for this!

    Bugtesting so far:

    The Grape Tee seems to still not have it's inventory sprite displaying. The other two items have been fixed.

    The Jar of Lollypops aims. . .oddly when I'm placing it. Quite a bit down and to the left of where I aim my cursor. I'm not sure whether this is a bug or not since it's the same size as breakable items, but it also breaks upon attempting to be collected. There's no sound effect cue though, so I figured I should check.

    There are two entries for the Inkling Crafting Table at the Inventor's Table.

    Quite a few items are aiming a bit to the left of where my cursor is and break upon attempted collection. Other than the Lollypops, these are all wall mounted items. These include: Autographed Concert Poster, Blue Directional Sign, Colorful Concert Poster, No Ink Allowed Sign, Octarian Stamp Poster, Paradise Lost, Starfish Graffiti, and Whimsical Squid Graffiti.

    The Modernized Cabinet also skews a bit to the left, but it can be collected and seems to be for a different reason: It doesn't "like" having items to the right of it that should logically fit there, so I'm guessing some empty space got added in with it.

    *EDIT* Shogun's Armor has two entries on the Manipulator's Table. One seems to be where the headgear should be.

    *EDIT EDIT* Inkling tenants still seem to be spawning in their birthday suits.

    *EDIT EDIT EDIT* Aaaaand trying to talk to them made my game lock up for a bit and then KILLED them. Trying again doesn't lock the game up, but still kills them.

    . . .Maybe my voice is a Brown Note? :nurutease:

    *EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT. . .EDIT* OK, thought it was the Squid in a Jar but that's actually fine and places properly. And is awesome. The Modernized Bookcase and Modernized Table each have a single pixel wide of empty space above them. *edit* The Bookcase actually has two.

    *EDIT x6* And I had this in an earlier draft but accidentally deleted it, but the text labeling the Autographed Concert Poster is trying to escape off the top of the crafting menu.

    I laughed a little harder than I should have at the death-by-interaction thing. Oh my gosh.

    I'll fix the furniture and armor when I get home, and I'll look more into the tenants. It's uncharted territory for me, so I really appreciate the patience.

    If you could, I'd love a .log after mysterious tenant deaths and interactions.

    so, hmm, ive been messing arround with some of your mod's assets (sorry :p, if you want me to stop i will) and i decided to edit the eyes so that they could be colorable (and a little bit bigger). the eye color is the same as the marking's, so if you change the color of the markings, the eye color will change as well

    Dude.. that's super cool! I didn't think of connecting eye color to markings because I wasn't sure how it'd work with the emoting system-- that's an inkcredible idea and looks really neat!
    Not to mention that it brings out the coloring of the mask a lot better, you can actually use a darker black instead of a blue-gray. That always bugged me, but this fixes that nicely.

    If you toss me the edited versions of the assets (head sprites, emotes, and whatever else has been edited to accommodate this), I'll look at them a bit closer and see how well they'll integrate with all the hats and clothes. Credit'll go to you if it gets implemented!

    OK, going to to try getting what I think is the .log from my last session. . .

    . . .On second thought, that .log file is so long that a fraction of it crashes my browser trying to paste it, so I'm scared what it would do if I posted it.

    I temporarily unsubscribed the mod so I could try for some more .log files before I update.

    . . .OK, something is going on that is a WHALE of a script, so I'm going to try talking to them ONCE and sharing the .log file instead of triggering it several times like I have been. Hopefully that will be bite sized enough.

    . . .Dang, I STILL have to copy this thing in multiple parts. Hopefully it doesn't do anything bad to the forum, LOL.

    LOL, it may be big now but I cut it down by a LOT.

    The text I gave you just now is 45.1 KB. The original file was 145 KB and the second attempt was 70.3 KB.

    I'm looking over the older files in case I missed anything, but I don't know much about code at all. It all seems like the same stuff as what I gave you to my untrained eye, just a huge glob of text with the words "star" and "lua" appearing all over the place.

    Lua is a coding language that I've heard people here say they use to make Starbound stuff, but other than that I can't make heads or tentacles of why it's showing up so much or what stars have to do with tenants. Maybe another mod is messing up, but the second time I only killed a couple enemies that were attacking my tenant and talked more than once to my squid tenant and it's still quite a bit higher in data than the third time where I talked to the tenant only once.

    No problem with that! Most of it is just the game trying to handle errors, but if you look for the word "Error" and what files it names, it's surprisingly easy to figure out where problems are happening. Don't worry, though, I can handle it for myself-- just be sure to provide logs when you find issues like these! :3

    Either way, it looks like the tenant issues you got were related to issues in the converse.patch file + related ones, and there were some tweaks needed in the clothing files. I'm not certain if those were the fixes necessary, but a missing comma or extra bracket leads to break a whole file.. so I'll do some more testing.
    I'll give the npc + tenant sections a little more TLC when I have the time, and hopefully they'll be functional in good time!

    Thank you! I've played around with them a bit, made them nice and consistent over emotes, and made all the tentacle styles compatible.

    I hope it's all right that I made the femalehead.png the default for both sexes? It looks way better with emoting, since the brow in emoting interacts with the black mask, and I feel that the block of black to the side of the eye is neutral enough to look good on a male inkling. I've also tweaked the emote.png sheet a bit to fit that tweak.

    I think they look really good, a lot better than the default eyes, so if you're fine with it, I'll be using them and crediting you!

    I've had waaaay too much fun parkouring off of these things in the plaza, so I went ahead and tried to make a sprite for them. If they had a surface you could stand on mapped to the top, I could jump from pole to pole in Starbound the same way I've been doing it in Splatoon. . .

    Those are very cute and would be fun to jump around on. And place decorations on. I am always up for more stuff to put decor on.
    You don't have to worry too much about inventory sprites: they're no trouble for me! (But I appreciate it anyways because it means a tiny less work. Hehe.)


    Either way, working on little things tonight, like furniture placement and the buffs that I wanted to put in the initial 0.9 release but couldn't.
    I can't offer any ETA for the next major content drop, since my life's a lot busier as of today, but I'll see if I can't get stuff done on Fridays and Saturdays. I've already got all the models for the final weapon tier (just not fully colored and edited yet), I've got all the armor finished, so now I can work on the more mundane stuff.
    Weapon alterations, buffs, food, tenants, small things like that for now. Custom pet, ship and other big things'll come around eventually.
    It might be a while, but I'm here for the long and expansive haul. <3

    Update:

    Tenants are now spawning correctly and don't explode upon being talked to. The bad news is that they're still nude and answer with stock lines.
    At least they're not dying this time.

    I've never actually interacted with a TV item ingame before, but that's why vanilla assets make for the best templates.

    I've actually been thinking the same thing for that furniture set: I was going to make a treasure chest and/or crate, a door, a lamp or two... and since Inklings are both technologically advanced and seem to have a wide tolerance of what they put in their living spaces, there's a lot of stuff that could be done.
    Maybe a toaster.. and a stovetop. Their own food preparation place, which'll probably not be restricted to unique recipes. Hmm..


    Also, as of five minutes ago, I've gotten tenants working! I don't know what I did to fix it besides clean up commas/brackets and rewrite the file pathing a bit, but they're both talking properly and spawning with clothes now. Their randomness is fun, even though somehow I got two yellow+blue-marked ones with Octarian hairstyles, one after another.
    (And that's a little unnerving, since blue-ringed octopi are adorable but super dangerous.)


    I'm still testing to make sure that my first proper tenant is using stuff from their general and inkling-to-inkling dialogue banks, but I can confirm that they're no longer nude, no longer have issues speaking, and no longer spontaneously explode upon being interacted with. They've got pretty decently-sized dialogue pieces for each vanilla race and themselves at this point-- I still need to write up formal lore beyond what's already clear, and then work that even more into what they say

    Guards and job NPCs will come once I'm sure normal villager tenants are behaving properly!

    Unless they were slipped some place I haven't noticed the items haven't been added to the mod yet, though.
