Starbound resolution glitch??

Hi! I'm having a problem with starbound, so i was wondering if y'all could help me out?
(I'm playing on windows, and I'm using it through steam, no mods btw.)

This glitch has happened to me before, and it resulted in me losing my characters because i had to reinstall, and it didn't save through steam.

Basically, the game launches in full screen, but with black bars on the side, and smaller then the actual screen (i had it on the optimal resolution before, but it launches differently.) if i go into the game's graphics settings and change them to the optimal one, it over-stretches the game window and freezes, and won't let me close it even if i alt tab out.

I would reinstall it, but I don't wanna risk losing my best play through so far.
