Not at all. That's my point. You can't have true aliens when the whole game is based on Star Trek rubber-head aliens. There is zero difference between the current races and sadly, that appears to be intentional. The sandworms would have "lights" that don't emit visible light but enhance their own ground sonar ability. They would move through earth, "consuming" ores and leaving dirt behind so that they create no actual tunnels. They would not need to create connecting corridors because digging through dirt is as fast as walking is for another race. Corridors would only be built for the benefit of other races... and the sandworms would actually move slower through them. Definitely alien. Not a human with a rubber mask. =) And then we have a race of spiders. They build nets between bland towers (or between the structures of other races =) and suspend all the "machines" in the net. They can move up/down freely while on their nets. They don't have a concept of floors or ceilings. They don't work when limited to walking left/right and jumping. But I guess someone is going to make a human with a spider head eventually so...
Hm. When I saw you reply to me, I thought I was going to get irritated again, but this actually cheered me up! Thanks! (That's seriously not sarcasm, by the way ) Ha ha, really, I'm not trying to start any sort of shouting match here. I just don't like these kinds of threads. They seem completely pointless and completely designed to get ire up (like mine ). I just don't know what's the point of posting a thread where you say "Boy, these types of races sure do suck. Why aren't there more of these other types of races that I like? You people that make the first types of races should stop being so stupid and make these other types of races that I like." And no, I did not misread the OP, but perhaps the message it presented was unintended. You have better ideas than mine? Post them! I like variety as much as the next person. That's why people want more races in the first place. Please, I beg you, prove to me that you can make an even better, alien-like race than mine. I'd really like to see it. And I'd really like to play as it! Thank you so, so much for understanding the point I was trying to make. I just think threads like this are unfair to all the people that put a lot of time and effort into their very public ideas (not just me). I want to see interesting new alien races, too. But I'm not going to discount any race because of how it looks or because of what it's made of, so to speak. Why would anyone do that?
Okay! Ignoring the complete and total shitstorm that we all knew would come from this, i need to clear something up. Writing that up I in no way meant that "creative" equals "Non-humanoid". I was literally just trying to refer to the wave of "furry" ideas without using the word "furry". When i say furry, of corse i don't mean anything with inhuman features, or just anything that happens to have fur. All I meant is pretty exactly what SArias and Taxiderby said way earlier. Something other than just "An animal in space". As for the size of the sprites being limiting, i absolutely know where you're coming from. Hoping to do what i could to throw off the "furry" trend myself, i threw my own race up here a bit ago(Which i won't bring up to keep things relevant.). Making the sprites look as inhuman as i meant them to was hard as hell, and i'm not sure i even pulled it off. But as races like the Novakids, Oscura, and monophytes (and dozens of others that absolutely deserve a mention but i can't be assed to remember their names) prove, it can be done. Oh, and i know ME wasn't a great example. But the only other things that came to mind were Star Wars and Star Trek, which i really don't know much about. But if you DO need some inspiration, checking out any list of the races on the Star Wars wiki. Everything fits a humanoid frame, but looks very alien. Many are clearly based on some kind of animal, but they're all so appropriately alien you can tell they come from a different planet. Some of these pictures are kind of huge. Also i'm going to throw up a quick note telling the mods to leave in the arguing. Nothing wrong with a little disagreement, despite the hostility. Displays both sides more or less equally, and cutting out half the discussion because someone's mad about it would just be immature.
I feel that I need to throw in some points as well, lets hope they're valid enough to be moved up where they can be seen. Firstly, I'm pretty damn sure the person who started this thread is not trying to say animal-based suggestions are the bane of existence to this particur sub-forum. They even go as far as to say that the present races in starbound are not all just simply an upright animal and serve no other purpose than to cater toward a particular furry lover sect. The point they ARE making though, is that a good percentage of suggestions are shaped by the mindset "Boy, those avians sure are cool, but it would be even COOLER if I could be a squirrell person. I know! Why don't I suggest squirrell people in the race thread!" and leave it at that, or rarely take it a bit further thinking "Oh, but no one would take me seriously if I just said squirrell men. I'll have to persuade them by saying that they're really friendly to all but X race and take after the culture of cherokee indians. I'll even give them a totally not overused name from modern fantasy, or a mixup of thier earth name or latin root word." The author is trying to say while it may be inevitible that the races will likely be based off of things from earth, we should not restrict the designs to one single feature from one given reference to real life. They are suggesting that instead of creating the culture AFTER you doodle up your creature design, you might want to do the opposite. Tell us a compelling tale of thier origins, and explain how these adventures would shape their very species in a way that would have benefitted the survival of thier race. Make us believe that their bizzare appearence is the result of their development, and not just something you slapped on them just because you thought that would draw more attention to them. And also, it's incredibly silly to say "What's wrong with me suggesting something I'd want to play?". While there's nothing wrong with wanting something in game that is a snug fit to your personal preference of character choice, getting angry at those who provide a counter arguement as to 'why they are cool' with 'why they are not cool' is just them puttingin their vote. That's how things do or do not make it into games. In short, all we're asking for is something a bit more in deph than simply a bipedal animal just because you want one. We would like to see somehing that WE would like to play as well as you. If you're just making a race for your own interests, then of course people are going to start calling you a furry freak, because its no longer about the community, or making the game more fun or interesting for everyone, it becomes all about you. Also, being able to come up with an idea and post it along with some artwork does not make you the only one qualified to judge a race topic. People are perfectly capable of making good judgements or stating opinions without being masters of the fine arts.
Aye. I know it may be asking a little much, but prehaps this thread could be pinned. It could help even more quality races come to the surface.
I'm all for it. Variety is the spice of life! Maybe it will give people more confidence in posting more alien-like races, or thinking about how they can alter their own races slightly.
tbh I'm just hoping a thread like this encourages "furry" race suggestors to consider simply trying to mod their race in the game or something rather than suggesting it as an official race. an official race suggestion for the game should have a history and lore crafted with love and care and many interesting features like how their culture is and how they react to other races and such.
I'm gonna tell you,as much as furry/etc "suggestions" are annoying I actually don't know what the devs want. Maybe they're all furries?
Posting again on this to say thank you, this has given me a few ideas in the making of my own race that I have posted recently, while I wasn't making a manimal, it shifted the change to be more alien looking. I hope that lets me stand out from the rest, as races seem to be a pretty saturated market at the moment.
Many people would want a dog race. There has been a suggestion for a Kangaroo race, and if there is a Bird race and Roo race...I will not be happy with the world if there isn't a dog race. I think maybe a british themed dog race, but definitely something different from that of Wizard101's Marleybonian people.
Judging from a few posts I have seen, a significant number of Starbound players are furries. I don't call myself a furry, but I am not one to shy away from it.
Is it dead if your clearly still watching it? xD Plus that doesn't mean you can't post. Mods haven't closed it.
I do. You automatically follow a thread which you reply to. But the thread wouldn't be "dead" unless it was closed, which it isn't. This thread simply was dormant, like Mt. St. Helens before it catastrophically erupted.
Thats if it is senseless and not contributing. Mine could be arguably a contribution, as it was relevant and a response to something someone said. Perhaps you should fully read rules? ;P
