Crystal resonance, it mentions it ingame a few times and it's a real thing. It's what makes quartz crystals create electric fields to keep track of time in clocks. It's pretty cool actually

In real life lasers use ruby crystals to line up the light into a beam, and the crystals appear to be ruby, so you just need to put a light inside it and it can actually burn things. In the lore Avolite crystals are said to be superconducors given to Avians by another race. Starbound seems to be at least 500 years into the future, so even more powerful lasers could have been developed. We already have lasers strong enough to blow up missiles that are thousands of feet away

I'm not to familiar with laser technology, but isn't the effective range and aim still an issue? At least we don't seem to be making death rays any day soon.

Point being, there isn't magic in starbound. I'm not arguing, it's just that everything in the game is explained by technology. Who knows what sorts of tech people will invent in 500 years
