If you're having trouble launching Starbound after the 1.0 update, try the following:

"The game just doesn't load! There's no error message!"

Try deleting your entire 'Starbound' directory (C: -> Program Files -> Steam -> Steamapps -> common -> Starbound) and reinstalling via Steam.

"I'm getting an error message about missing "api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll"

Your PC may have failed to install Visual C++ 2015. You can download it here! If you're unable to install it, please ensure that you've installed the latest service packs for your version of Windows.

Additional note from thetacriterion: "It's worth noting that the error described in the OP may (will?) not display if you're launching through steam; the game will silently fail to launch with no error. For me, the error didn't start showing until I tried launching directly through starbound.exe in the game files. So it may be worth trying the Visual C++ solution even if you're not seeing the error.

I was able to get the game running by just going to the Starbound_CommonRedist\vcredist\2015 subfolder, running each of the .exe files there, and selecting "repair" on each. Unsure if this will work for everyone, but it did for me, no additional downloading required."

If you're using mods, that's almost certainly why! Your mods may have unresolved bugs or may simply be out of date. You will need to contact the mod author as the author is responsible for the tech support of the issue. If you have tons of mods installed, you will need to remove all of them and install them one at a time and find out which mod is causing the error.

Mac OS X "The application has quit unexpectedly"

The most common reason OS X users see this message is because they are running a version of OS X below 10.9.Upgrading to 10.9 or above resolves this issue for most users.

If you are running OS X 10.9 or higher and still seeing this message, try disabling the Steam overlay!

I thought there might be a new build uploaded to Steam that fixed the issue, so I redownloaded Starbound for about the tenth time since 1.0 release.

But still, no change. Launching via Steam crashes without any error message, launching the executables directly generates the same error messages as before. I provided more info about the error messages in "Known Common Issues for Starbound 1.0" and I think it is related to SDL and some audio device / driver issues, since it always crashes right before the SDL Sound components get initialized.

i start the game from the files but that works but it laggs a bit more and dont have steam intigration but at least i can play it this way

 

believe me, I tried that too. It just shows opengl 2.0 not available and then closes.

You need to provide more information in order for anyone to help. What are your PC's specs? Are you seeing an error message at all?

 

I had an unpacked folder of game data in the assets folder. Deleting it fixed the problem.

 

Thanks Eli_The_Echo, but that's not the issue. I only have a "packed.pak" file and a "user" folder containing the audio files in there. Just as is should be. I don't use mods and never touched any Starbound files in any way.

Is there going to be a patch or anything for these issues?

 

This doesn't address the same issue happening on some supported versions of OSX. It seems like a lot of people aren't finding this fix to be enough on several versions of Win. This feels like a bit of a cop out.

It's frustrating because I just bought server time to play a game that I paid for and was excited about.

Any chance of an actual fix on the way?

 

I first had trouble with getting the game to play. My brother, space wizard that he is, managed to fix it through some sort of electronic magic. My only problem now is the severe lag that renders the game unplayable. Oddly enough, it doesn't lag at the launching screen. My brother tells me that renaming certain files (like the launcher), changing permissions and resorting some files was the initial issue. Hopefully that will help the Chucklefish team fix it for other people. He doesn't know how to fix the lag but he's going to look into it.

 

I said earlier, that I don't get any error messages when I try to launch the game through Steam. But it still generates a starbound.log file - which is different from running the executables directly:

If I have to guess, "VulkanSteamOverlayProcessCapturedFrame" points to an issue with the Vulkan API (OpenGL?) and / or the Steam overlay. That being said: deactivating the Steam overlay in the settings doesn't change anything.

 

Having some issues with that aswell, with version x64 the game starts and justs stops before Chucklefish logo with the black background and a white square.
With version x86 the game goes smoothly to the menu but soon after I get an error message, though I think they're related, it has something to do with storage apparently.

I'm still trying some things, but this might be other people's problem too.


EDIT1: deleting the folder "player" inside storage got me a little further, it now freezes in the menu, getting past the CF logo. Is it me or that folder need some files to work? Can anyone confirm?
EDIT2: managed to play a little in x86, I simply moved the error box and started playing. The x64 version still freezes before logo. So it's not the player folder the problem, as it now have files.

 

I don't understand something. When I enter ur link to visual c++ or service pack I cant download them. I click download but nothing happens.

 

anyway to do this on a mac? Its OS X Version 10.8.5 I'm not that good with computers
